Rome: Day 1

Traveling is so hectic. To be honest, I do not think I am very good at it. When traveling by myself I tend to misjudge time, obsess over trivial details, aaaaand loose things. This time, I lost my phone. Or it was stolen in the hostel. I'm not sure which, either is likely. It took me about eleven hours to get from London to my hotel in Rome.

Yesterday was a busy day. I woke up late, had hardly any sleep due to the noise of the hostel, and ran down to the half price ticket booth in Leicester Square. I scored a ticket to the matinee showing of We Will Rock You. In the hour and a half of time I had to kill before the show, I scoped out Portobello Market. It is a good thing I did not bring a lot of pocket change with me, I wanted to buy everything. It definitely lived up to my expectations. There were antiques everywhere, fun clothing, and street musicians. The hardest moment was when I had to overlook a 1930's illustrated edition of Alice in Wonderland. So beautiful. £45. Not a bad deal at all, but I could not excuse the splurge. Someday I will return to Portobello and buy whatever strikes my fancy.

We Will Rock You. I was not sure what to expect. As a Queen fan, I tried to keep an open mind. It was a very...creative use of the music. When the Bohemian rebels were caught, they were banished to the Seven Seas of Rhye. There was a solid romantic plot and hilarious pop culture jokes. For instance, the toughest of the Bohemians was a man named Britney Spears. I'm so glad I got to see this show, and the rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody at the end gave me goose bumps.

After the show I went to the New Orleans festival in the O2 and hung out with some Leicester kids. There was no amazing cajun food, which was disappointing, but there was really great music and dancing.

Today Aaron and I walked around the area surrounding our hotel. We got some gelato. We got some pizza. Tonight we walked around the Colosseum. The weather is perfect. 70 degrees and clear skies. A vast improvement to the dreary climate of London.

Yup -- travel would be a lot easier if it weren't for the travel part.

Sorry you lost the phone. Bummer. On the other hand, that phone was less expensive than a good meal.

That illustrated Alice - did it include a certificate of authenticity? (Caveat emptor).

Gelato and the Colosseum at the same time. And pizza in Rome. It dud'n get any better'n that.

Buona fortuna. Ciao.

I'm sorry you lost your phone, my love. But your cultural experiences are absolutely dizzying-I'm glad you got to take in a show and that you survived the 11 hour journey South.

Things I want to know:

1. What does Roman pizza taste like?
2. What is your hostel like?
3. Why is Italy so far away?
