My biggest accomplishment of the day has been reading the Life of Lycurgus by Plutarch. It's a biography of the most influential legislative reformer in Spartan history. I read about how Spartiates were required to have meals together in order to regulate what they ate. The idea was to keep people from 'giving free rein to every craving and excess which demanded lengthy slumbers, warm baths, plenty of rest, and, in a sense, daily nursing.' I read all of this while lying down in my bed well past noon listening to music and drinking tea. Guilt crept its way into my mood.
Tonight after dinner I watched the second half of an English football game in Beaumont Bar. Yes, I mean soccer. The game was between England and Belarus. We won 3 - 1!!

I remember a psychologist friend discussing a "depression inventory," a tool by which therapists measure a client's psychological state as it changes over time. I wonder what the psychological state was in Sparta. They were certainly an effective city-state, but were they happy?
Don't feel guilty. Arch conservatives (let them be called "Spartans" or "Republicans") are never happy.
By chance did England beat Belarus in "football" rather than "Belsara"? Just checking.
