Leicester: Day 14

No class today, but I didn't sleep in late or anything. Kate had a break in between classes from 10 to 1, so I met up with her on campus and we walked to City Center for some shopping and lunch. I needed a book bag, lest I be carrying around my amazing but really heavy laptop bag. There is a open/farmer's-type market in the middle of Leicester. Under a huge tented outdoor square there is everything from produce to dvds, jewelry, and fabric. The trip was successful and it felt good to walk around in the unusually warm weather. It got up to a whole 60 degrees today, Fahrenheit, that is. It was misting and raining a lot, but I had my trusty London umbrella with me. Back at campus I purchased Romanticism: An Anthology Third Edition. It is a whopping 1477 pages long. Yes, I typed that correctly. No, I don't have to read all of it, just some of it. It's a brick though, and I have no idea how I'm going to get it home. I know I'm not going to want to give it up.

I have been forgetting to mention one of the coolest things about the Leicester University campus. There is a building called Attenborough Tower, and it has a very special elevator system called the Paternoster. So Latin, right? It is a cyclic elevator, and I don't think I will ever not be excited to ride it. I feel so lucky that I have a class that requires me to use it every week. Whee!

Tonight I had a relaxing evening with the Aussies, watching YouTube videos. Classic.

Wow. A market that's been around for probably 1,000 years. How cool is that.

But: be wary of an elevator named after a prayer. Here's the the paternoster (or Pater Noster) for your translation entertainment. You may recognize it. (The original was in Greek):

Pater noster, qui es in caelis:
sanctificetur Nomen Tuum;
adveniat Regnum Tuum;
fiat voluntas Tua,
sicut in caelo, et in terra.
Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie;
et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
Sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris;
et ne nos inducas in tentationem;
sed libera nos a Malo.

I'm sure the elevator is NOT the reference in the "libera nos a Malo" part. ;-)
