Leicester: Day 33

I had to say goodbye to Kate today, quite a few others left as well. There were a lot of people going to Dublin, Barcelona, Durham, etc. Thankfully not everyone left, it should still be a nice weekend.

I did a lot of reading for Art History before I had my class today. It's a sort of love/hate relationship. I love the idea of reading things by Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, and Mondrian. On the other hand, trying to struggle through them, it gives me the impression that artists should just paint, not write. Perhaps I'll change my mind when some of it starts making sense.

The last class of the day was my Ancient History class, and I had the pleasure of grabbing a pint at the pub in the student union with a couple of my classmates afterwards. The professor today was particularly brutal towards the girl giving her presentation, so beer was definitely a good idea. It all felt very English. Lots of talk about football too.

I hope you have some opportunities to see more of England before you leave. Canterbury, the great country homes, the small towns of the Lake District (I'm pretty sure one is Bilbo Baggins').

Some artists are great theorists, but others can't write very critically about their craft -- it varies a lot between artists in all genres of art. You're exactly right that some should just "do" art instead of commenting on it.

Have a great weekend. I'd be thrilled to join you in a pint o' Guinness.

Cheers,
love, k
