Leicester: Day 31

Today has been the best day ever! Obama won!!!!! There was cheesecake at dinner! I finished reading Emma! I didn't have any class and I got my laundry done! So many good things happened here today, seriously.

I have gotten some inquiries as to how the election is being perceived in the mother country. There have been three different manners I have discovered in most English when I have talked to them about it:

1. They know nothing about it. I know you are surprised, but the University of Leicester is a campus much like the University of Kansas. There are just some students that take absolutely no interest in politics, that of their country's or any other's, and are too completely absorbed in their own world to take notice. To each their own.

2. They are aware of it, but have almost no knowledge of the specifics. 'Isn't Obama black?', 'Is Palin really a crazy hockey mom?', 'What's hockey?' I kid, I kid. But seriously, I ran into a friend last night and he saw my Obama t-shirt, when I mentioned watching the election results, he asked 'Aren't the elections not until next June?'

3. They are as interested in it as if it were their own country's election. I had a new sense of affection for the young English freshers in my block when this morning I walked out into the foyer and saw two new paper signs taped up on the stairwell. One said, 'Obama won!' The one below said, 'Woot!' Gotta love 'em, they do enjoy putting up signs.

Also, I put up some pictures from Rome! Be sure to check them out, you can click on the slideshow to see them in a larger view.

This is already one of the great moments in American history. Before Obama actually does anything as president-elect, this is a landmark moment. Internationally, America has regained considerable prestige just by the fact of Obama's election. And you were there.

America -- the place where all things are possible.

We've tried to get a New York Times, but every store in the Valley was sold out. I had a customer come in for the Times because his daughter couldn't find any -- and his daughter lives in New York.

Great pictures! More!

How exciting, non? You wouldn't have had to stay up much longer (since they called it early), but I'm sure waking up to that news was just as awesome.

I second what Kenn said about the NY Times...none to be found in Lawrence (though I heard they were selling on ebay for $200 yesterday...). If I find a Newsweek or another exciting magazine, I'll pick one up for you. Also thank you for your insight into "across the pond" politics...very interesting.

Time to check out your photos! Miss and love thee.
