Cambridge

Saturday in Cambridge, it doesn't get much better than that.

Some of the international students and I took a day trip to Cambridge. We toured the old colleges and learned a lot about their history. We saw the American World War II cemetery/memorial. We saw where nano technology is being developed. We saw The Eagle pub where the discovery of DNA was announced. We saw the chapel of King's College, with its massive English Gothic fan-vaulted ceiling and the graffiti left there by Cromwell's soldiers.

On the list of the 25 best things to do in England, punting on the Cam is number 3. I would definitely put it in the top ten things I have done so far abroad. Ten of us sat comfortably in a punt while a very nice Englishman punted us along the river Cam with a long pole. It was very relaxing. The sun was out, the air cool, there were beautiful college buildings and gardens on either side, neat bridges, and our punter was very ready with his history. Good company, too. It is a very popular thing to do in Cambridge, and there are not only tourists but also locals just enjoying their evening. The punters all know each other and have a tendency to race and try to knock into each other. We wanted to put together a YouTube video about it, called 'Punt Wars'.

It was a great day, and we even made it back in time for dinner.

Wow. Vanessa on the water. Pretty special event, and rare.

Envy abounds. Cambridge sounds like a wonderful place. I would love to see that ceiling. Did you find any Isaac Newton memorabilia? Did you run into Stephen Hawking out taking a stroll? Were Watson and Crick sipping a brewski in the pub?

It's now 6 pm here, and since you and Susan Skyped, she has been across the street making tamales. Margaritas may be involved.

(Is it proper to use the verb form "to skype"?)

Love, k

You're going to have so many stories to tell us Lawrence folk when you get back. I am jealous of your historical tours (that include science!!).

I've never heard of punting before in this sense. It sounds incredibly fun to sit on a river and be punted around and listen to interesting stories. And please make a Punt Wars video.

Study time! And less than two months until I see your smiling, cultured face.

Love,
Jamie
