Leicester: Day 56

I finished my English essay this morning. That makes 9,000 words I have turned in, only 4,000 more to go. It's getting easier. Sort of.

Tonight was the Beaumont and Digby Ball. The entire Beaumont House was decorated. There was a casino and live music. They turned the dining hall, which had just yesterday been the lunch room for the Queen, into a large dance floor. All the study abroad kids were there, and the pictures were endless. We are all starting to feel the pain of goodbyes. It was a great night though.

That sounds so wonderful! They must have a huge crew to transform the Hall so quickly. I can't wait to see your picutes and hear your stories. Enjoy!

Ahhh, the Beaumont and Digby Ball. How'd the dress work out? And what kind of music did they play? Sounds like a great time!

The "cranking out papers" thing does get easier. It's a fabulous skill to have, and it will serve you well for years. One semester in PhD work, I had to generate one 15-page paper, on average, every week for 16 weeks. That's about 5,000 words per week -- about 80,000 for the semester. It wasn't much fun.

I hate all the goodbyes. It's a standard aspect of the academic life. Every year, 1/4 of the people you know move on. Then you move on, too. As you already are. . . .

. . . but when you get back, the US, the KU campus, everything will look different. It will all be familiar/strange because your perspectives are shifting.

Casinos? Balls are different these days. When I was young, balls involved princesses.

Anyway, hear hear to Kenn's comment on shifting perspectives. Saying goodbye will be hard, but we will be SO so so so glad to see you.
