Leicester: Day 53

Today has been a day of recovery. Mostly sleeping and eating and vegging out in my room watching videos online. Tomorrow I'll dive into my next essay which is due on Friday. Apparently it snowed this morning but I slept through it. It is getting really cold here, and the days continue to get shorter.

Wow. With all this experience, those academic writing skills must be honed to a razor sharp edge.

One of the three coldest moments in my life was in London, of all places. December 26 in whatever year it was. It was the coldest weather England had reported in something like 50 years, and it was hostile to living things.

Days will continue to shorten to the solstice. In England, which is above the 50th parallel, short days seem shorter. To find an American city that far north, you've gotta go to Canada or Alaska. (Omaha, for instance, is about 40 degrees north.)

This brings to mind one of my favorite Christmas hymns, which is classic English writing; "In the deep midwinter, / Frosty wind made moan; / Earth stood hard as iron, / Water like a stone. . . ."

Happy holidays (upcoming).
