Leicester: Day 54

I awoke this morning to a long awaited email, the decision on whether or not my research proposal would be accepted for next semester, and...

I got the Undergraduate Research Award!!!!

The smile on my face has not had many breaks today. I'm so happy. I'm so excited to work on this project in the spring. Yet another confirmation that if I try for something, I can get it, and even if I don't, it's well worth trying. One more rung on the ladder of my academic career, which is hopefully leaning up against one of the walls in Oxford.

As my days left in Leicester dwindle, I am thinking more and more about the things I am going to miss most. It sounds cliche, but I am really going to miss double decker buses. I have ridden them almost everyday twice a day since I've been here. This is also the first time in my life that I have needed to use a bus system so regularly, and now double deckers are my default basis for comparison. Tea has also been a staple for me here, and today I bought a box of my favourite Twinings flavour: chamomile with honey and vanilla. Hopefully I can fit it in my luggage somewhere. I will desperately miss City Centre, and the fancy movie theatre, along with all the hustle and bustle of downtown Leicester. The cultural diversity here is incredible, and it feels so right. I'll be adding to the list as time passes, for now I sleep in preparation of finishing an essay tomorrow.

Congratulations (again) on the UGRA. I hope to open your application soon. When the computer is fixed. It is a WONderful opportunity which you earned by exceptional credentials and a fine proposal.

Do you know the story of the guy in Lawrence who bought a double-decker bus and had it imported? The guy who owns the Jayhawk Bookstore? He intended to use the bus for publicity, giving regular transportation across campus. But the university administration rejected the plan, saying he had no authority to take the bus down Jayhawk Boulevard. Big investment. Zero return.

Twinings teas are available in the US. Perhaps not the same flavors. But Twinings is here.

You may well miss City Centre, but when you've been in the US awhile, you will recover your ability to spell "center" correctly.

Sleep: . . . balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course. . . .

Love, k
